Most currently a resident of St. James Manor, Oneonta, he was 12 days shy of his 86th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Ella (Van Orden) Van Wicklen, of Oneonta, daughter, Betty J. Van Wicklen of Watervliet, sisters, Elizabeth Ann Norejko of Mineola, and Mary Alice Biggers of Sea Cliff; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Van Wicklen was the son of the late George H. Van Wicklen, Sr. and Elizabeth (Smith) Van Wicklen, of Sea Cliff, and brother of the late George H. Van Wicklen, Jr. Mr. Van Wicklen served proudly as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Corps during World War II, rising to the level of having the ability to certify all airplane repair work at his base. After the war, he operated the Triangle Gas & Service Station in Brookville, for many years. In 1959, he bought a non-working farm outside of Oneonta and the Grand Gorge Liquor Store, which he ran until retirement. He was a longtime member of the West Davenport United Methodist Church and the West Davenport Cemetery Society. In October of 1999, he moved to St. James Manor to enjoy his retirement. Wherever he went, he made friends who will miss him deeply. His many friends and relatives will long remember his eager helping hands, his mischievous twinkle and sense of humor; his sound advice; his bird houses, feeders, and toys; and his creative way of making tools to fit almost any purpose. As a last generous gift he donated his body to medical research, in his own way helping to increase medical knowledge which will help others. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the American Heart Fund, the Salvation Army, or the West Davenport United Methodist Church. A memorial service for Mr. Van Wicklen will be held at St. James Manor on Sunday, March 14 at 9:15AM. Please call St. James Manor or Mrs. Fern Briggs, Route 23, Davenport Center for Details.
